Thursday, June 19 – The Tour de Suisse conquers the Calanca!

Stage 5: La Punt – Santa Maria in Calanca (184.5 km)
The hardest. The most eagerly awaited. The most spectacular.

It will be the queen of the stages of this edition of the Tour de Suisse: 184.5 kilometers of majestic landscapes and relentless climbs, with over 3,500 meters of elevation gain and two Alpine passes above 2000 meters.

The day opens with a short flat, but soon the riders will tackle the dreaded Julierpass: 7.2 km at 6.7%, with the first 1.7 km at 9.5% and peaks at 11%. It's just the beginning. This is followed by a long and technical descent, interrupted by continuous counter-slopes, which will take the caravan to Thusis.

From there you start the legendary San Bernardino Pass: an endless but fascinating climb, which develops for 45 km at an average of 3%. The last 7.5 km are a real challenge: gradients of 6% among scenery of rare beauty, where the breath merges with that of the mountain.

And then... the final descent, very fast, leads to the valley, to Grono, where the fate of the stage is played out on the edge of the pedals. From here the final circuit begins: two climbs towards Castaneda and Santa Maria in Calanca that separate the greats from the champions.

The first climb ends in Castaneda (4.5 km at 9.8%, with sections at 15%) and serves as a prelude to the real battle: after a nervous stretch between Roveredo and Grono, the second ascent is definitive. 6.3 km at 9.5%, with deadly gradients in the initial stretch and a less grim but still selective final part. The finish line awaits at the top, in Santa Maria in Calanca, among woods, rock and the incitement of the home crowd.

An unprecedented finale, hard but suggestive, which will write an epic page in the history of cycling.
