In the summer of 2024, Sir András Schiff and tenor Julian Prégardien touched the audience in St. Jakob's Church with a deeply explored interpretation of Franz Schubert's song cycle "Die schöne Müllerin". Now Schiff's song recital with the Macedonian-Canadian mezzo-soprano Ema Nikolovska includes the "Song Circle" op. 39 by Robert Schumann, the highlight of his song oeuvre, in the centre. "Eichendorff's cycle is probably my most romantic of all," Schumann wrote to Clara Wieck. With the exception of the dramatic "Waldesgespräch" and the closing song "Frühlingsnacht", the twelve-part cycle is characterised by a restrained, inward-looking tone. Instead of a concrete plot, Schumann's images of nature and moods are masterfully musically condensed. Pure romanticism, which is also reflected in songs by Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Johannes Brahms.
