High Raetia Castle

The large rocky plateau high above the Hinterrhein is one of the oldest settlement sites in Switzerland that is still in use today - an extraordinary cultural asset in Graubünden with over 4000 years of history. High Raetia was located in the middle of the transalpine flow of traffic and goods over the Splügen Pass. Here you will find traces of settlement from the Bronze and Iron Ages (2500 – 800 BC), remains of a Roman station, late antique sacred buildings with baptistery and baptismal font from the 4th/5th century as well as the church of St. Johann & Viktor, once the centre of the large parish for the Heinzenberg/Domleschg region.
