Duke Ellington is one of the great absolute protagonists of 20th century music. His jazz is characterised by an extreme elegance (such as the elegance in dressing that earned him the nickname “the Duke”) and a continuous search for the ideal of “symphonic jazz” that he pursued. Alongside the best-known masterpieces, today's concert leads us to the rediscovery of a little-known but highly valuable production, such as the pieces Oclupaca, Smada, The Mooche and the Sacred Concerts, with which Ellington, who described them as the most important thing he had ever done, wanted to bring jazz into churches.
