On the subject of photography, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner has his say personally with texts from his letters. The reading wanders from station to station in the exhibition to give an insight into Kirchner's approach to photography. For example, he paid very close attention to the quality of printed photos of his pictures: "I'm sending you the promised photos here ... Instruction is written exactly on it. And 12 proofs with exact corrections, which the printing company should follow exactly. The illustrations are by no means like that. You will see the difference for yourself and agree with me that we don't need such dull images."

There are thoughts on this from Susan Sonntag's famous collection of essays "On Photography". She says: "Photography is the only way in which the view of the world can be permanently preserved – and yet every image remains an illusion that tries to grasp the truth."
