Description

Day 1: From Caischavedra, the route takes us through a small raised bog and alpine rose bushes to Lag Serein, a clear and blue eye amidst green alpine pastures. From here we switch to a blue-white marked alpine hiking trail. The landscape becomes rockier and the last meters up to the Brunnipass require all our strength and concentration. We have to be free from vertigo when we climb down on the other side, hanging on ropes and crossing airy ladders down to the glacier. We are glad to have our ice axe, with which we occasionally place a step on the bare glacier. The hut warden’s markings otherwise safely guide us over the mostly firn-covered glacier to the Cavardiras Hut.

Day 2: We continue our hike and descend eastward into the Val Cavardiras. The valley is still mountainous, rocky and barren in the first part but soon shows green patches and alpine pastures. At the transition from Val Cavardiras to Val Russein, we reach a wide natural road. Below the Barcuns reservoir, we must not miss the turnoff to Cumpadials and Sumvitg. This way, we reach the village and the train station in about 40 minutes. The train takes us back to Disentis.

Hidden Gem

Accommodation must be registered. If we bring up some fresh fruit or vegetables, the hut wardens will be very grateful.

Safety Note

In July/August, the Brunnifirn is still firn-covered, but later mostly snow-free and icy.

Equipment

In late summer, an ice axe or light crampons are recommended.

Hiking poles are also good aids on this hike.

Directions

From the panoramic restaurant in Caischavedra, we follow the shortest path towards Lag Serein. Here we turn off at the alpine hut onto the blue-white marked alpine hiking trail heading towards Brunnipass. Over the Brunnipass, we cross the narrow ridge and descend to the Brunnifirn. Now we follow the hut warden's markings over the firn-covered glacier to the hut. From there, marked hiking trails lead us through the Val Cavardiras towards Val Russein, where we cover a longer stretch on a natural road. Below Barcuns, we turn left onto the hiking path to Cumpadials and Sumvitg. The Rhätische Bahn train station is located between the villages of Cumpadials and Sumvitg. The train runs hourly in both directions.
