Description

The 5-Lake Hike is one of the most beautiful panoramic mountain hikes in Switzerland. High above the tree line, a mountain path winds through the constantly changing alpine landscape, past five mountain lakes – each with its own unique character. From the lovely Wangsersee on the Pizol high plateau, it goes on to the second lake, the striking turquoise Wildsee with the Pizol glacier and summit in the background. Followed by the dark Schwarzsee, the Schottensee shines as the third lake in a deep strong blue. The trail ends past the greenish, romantic Baschalvasee.

On the hike, it is worthwhile to let your gaze wander in all directions. Along the entire route, new fascinating views open up again and again into the Glarus and Grisons mountain world, the Rhine valley, and as far as Lake Constance.

Hidden Gem

Book a picnic backpack with regional delicacies via the Pizol cable cars.

Safety Note

We strongly recommend starting the hike no later than 11:00 a.m. Please note that you must be at the Gaffia chair lift by 4:30 p.m. or at the Pizol hut by 4:00 p.m., otherwise you will miss the last descent ride. The last descent by gondola from Furt is at 5:30 p.m. Afterwards, no transport by Pizolbahnen AG is possible.

In the first two weeks of August, livestock guardian dogs are used on Alp Gaffara. The sheep are inside a fenced pasture clearly separated from the hiking trail. The guardian dogs remain exclusively within this enclosure.
Important notes for hikers:
No risk: As long as the fence is not climbed over and your own dogs are kept on a leash, there is no risk.
Do not climb the fence: Under no circumstances should the pasture fence be climbed over or opened.
Dogs on a leash: Your own dogs must be kept on a leash in the pasture area – even if no guardian dogs are visible.

Equipment

Day hiking backpack (approx. 20 liters) with rain cover, sturdy and comfortable footwear, weather-appropriate and durable clothing in layers, optionally telescopic poles, sun and rain protection, provisions and drinking water, first aid kit, pocket knife, mobile phone, optionally headlamp, map material

Directions

With gondola and chair lifts, we reach the Pizol hut. From there we start the hike towards the Wangsersee, the first lake of the hike. On the same path, we go back past the Pizol hut and direction Wildseeluggen, where we arrive after a nearly 1-hour zigzag ascent. We hike along the Wildsee and reach, after a short descent, the deep blue Schottensee, where ibex can be observed on the mountain slopes. This is followed by a comfortably ascending crossing over the Schwarzplangg. The descent continues down to the dark Schwarzsee. Past the legendary stone cairns on the high plateau, we reach the last descent over the east flank of the Gamidaur, leading to the fifth and last lake, the green Baschalvasee. After that follows the descent to the Gaffia station.

Directions
