Description

The Crown of Surselva is an impressive and partly challenging circular hike from hut to hut in Graubünden. It connects the seven mountain huts in Surselva – the Vorderrhein Valley between Flims and the Rhine source at the Oberalp Pass, including the valleys of Vals, Lumnezia, and Medel.

Framed by various 3000-meter peaks of Graubünden, it leads through romantic mountain villages, lonely high valleys, past glaciers to unique geological formations and spectacular viewpoints.
The section: Val Russein - Val Gliems - Camona da Punteglias is an alpine hike (T4): the route is technically demanding and on some parts requires using hands to progress. Due to long sections and significant altitude differences, good fitness and experience in the mountains are also needed. The path is not continuously on official hiking trails (without official signage) and therefore requires good orientation skills.

The circular route starts in Disentis and is traveled clockwise. It can be split into rewarding partial stages and can be started from various starting points.

Hidden Gem

To relax on the long route, a visit to the spa at Hotel La Val or the Pradas Resort is worthwhile.

Safety Note

Note: Snowfields are possible on high-altitude sections even into the summer months.

If weather conditions are uncertain, the route should not be started. Weather changes in the mountains are frequent. If a rain front or similar approaches during the hike, you should turn back in time.

Equipment

Good hiking boots with a good tread, weather-appropriate clothing (rain jacket/sun protection), change of clothes, first aid kit, drinks, provisions, GPS device, possibly hiking poles.
