Description

We start the circular tour in the well-known spa town of Bad Ragaz and pass the villages of Vilters, Wangs, Mels, Plons, Heiligkreuz and Sargans along the way before returning to the starting point along the Rhine. There is hardly any elevation gain on this leisurely tour. Only on the ascent to Sargans Castle do we climb 100 meters. On the way to Sargans, Mels is recommended for a stopover with its newly designed village square, the town hall cellar and the characteristic Nidberg hill with its vineyard. After continuing via the Mels settlements of Plons and through the vineyards of Heiligkreuz, we reach the old town of Sargans. Sargans Castle, visible for miles around, towers proudly over the historic town. From the little town, a staircase leads directly up to Sargans Castle on foot. However, we can also reach the castle by e-bike from behind via a wide road.

Once at the top, we are rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view. The castle stands at the foot of the Gonzen mountain, on the lower slopes of which there are numerous hectares of vines. These include those of the Gonzen winery, whose fine wines mature in barrique barrels next door in the Gonzen mine. Not only is the wine cellar located in the mountain, but the Gonzenbergwerk restaurant also welcomes its guests underground.

On the way back to Bad Ragaz, we first take the Rhine embankment and then head upstream to the Fläscherbrücke bridge, where we turn off and are soon back at our starting point.

Hidden Gem

There are various places to stop for refreshments around the village square in Mels, including the Bistro Verrucano, which offers regional wines by the glass.
