Although the Piz d'Err is only the second highest mountain of the group after the Piz Calderas, it is the eponymous peak of this massif. The view, especially to the N and W, is impressive. The descents to Sur in Tinizong are demanding and reserved for alpine-experienced ski mountaineers.

Description

From the Chamanna Jenatsch:

Safe conditions on the Vadret d'Err are required (30 - 35° over 100 vertical metres). The summit ascent can be tricky in hard snow or even ice; crampons are then essential.

From the Chamanna Jenatsch (2652 m) northwest and through a steep valley hollow onto the Vadret d'Err. Steeply up in the middle (caution crevasses), then over the glacier plateau northwards past P. 3308 to the hollow at the foot of the summit buildup. Ski over the steep east-facing slope to below the distinctive summit rocks. Ski deposit. Now right through a steep snow gully into a saddle from north over easy rocks to the summit. 2.5 hours.

Descent: along the ascent route

Descent to Sur:

Great steep descent, but only for confident, alpine-experienced skiers and in ideal firn (average slope 35° over 450 vertical metres, up to 45° in the upper part). Occasionally also taken during the ascent. The protected areas north and south of Sur must be observed.

Descent: From ski deposit into the saddle between Piz d'Err and P. 3308. Then through the southwest couloir or depending on snow conditions over the south flank down into the large basin of Tellers Davains. Left of P. 2315 down into the Alp Flix plain to Tgalucas (1969 m) on the alpine path, finally over open meadow slopes to Sur (1537 m).

Descent into the Val d'Err to Tinizong:

Demanding alpine descent over the northern Vadret d'Err glacier. Due to glacier retreat, the steepness has increased compared to the ski map (30° - 45° over 400 vertical metres). Conditions must be checked in advance since the descent route is not visible from the summit; crevasse danger must not be underestimated. Excellent visibility and experience in assessing avalanche hazard are prerequisites.

Descent: from ski deposit eastwards and along the right glacier edge below the rocks of Corn Jenatsch (3165 m) keeping right into the vast basin of the Val d'Err. Through the gently inclined valley to Alp d'Err and Alp Viglia (1974 m), then shortly following the alpine path downhill to the bridge P. 1659 near Tgant Pensa. On the track or on the south side of the stream to Tinizong (1232 m).

Hidden Gem

After the route, stop at the mountain hotel Piz Platta on Alp Flix.
