Description
Most motorists speed past the village on the A13. A mistake: because San Bernardino, dominated by the angular Piz Uccello, has a lot to offer. For example, impressive swamp and moor landscapes that can also be explored in winter.
Following the old pass road, we first walk past the Capanna Genziana. This is where the actual winter hiking trail starts. Deep below us in the mountain lies the tube of the San Bernardino tunnel. The path leads over it towards the highlight of the winter hike, the so-called "Pont Nef" (new bridge). This was built in 1864 as a replacement for the dilapidated arch bridge Vittorio Emanuele, named after the Sardinian king. His kingdom participated in the financing between 1819 and 1823. The bridge was the centerpiece of the old trade route, which connected the economic centers of Lombardy and Piedmont with northern Europe. Above the Pont Nef, the course of the old road is visible. An information board recalls the so-called "King's Bridge".
The cozy hike has more to offer than just history: there is time to admire once again the panorama dominated by the local mountain Pizzo Uccello. We marvel at the impressive mountain landscape with its snow-covered high moors, the protruding peaks of the mountain pines, and occasionally the traces of wild animals. Shortly after the Pont Nef, the path leads us back to the village past Gareida and the striking Albarella residential complex. Back in the village, we warm up with a hot chocolate or regain strength with a fine piece of cake.
