Rhein-Reuss-Rhôneweg: Realp - Gletsch

Our topographical highlight is the Furka Pass at 2430 m. Gone are the days when Sean Connery filmed James Bond's Goldfinger or Richard Long and Max Bill gave free rein to their artistic freedoms. Only the original steam locomotives, which were bought back in Vietnam, steam back on the old mountain route thanks to hundreds of thousands of hours of volunteer steam train fans. Opened in 1982, the Furka Tunnel is open all year round. On the descent from the Furka Pass, the Rhone Glacier can no longer be seen. With dramatic speed, it melts away. The ice-blue glacier grotto, which is recreated every year, can still be visited. On the descent from the Furka Pass we can study the glacier apron. We stay at the Grand Hotel Glacier du Rhône, which 100 years ago offered 320 guest beds. That was also the time when a church was built for the noble English guests.
