Details
Description
This challenging and culturally and historically rich long-distance hike leads over around 80 kilometres through the fascinating mountain world between the Hinterrhein, the Avers Alps and the Bregaglia to the southern foothills of the Alps.
The starting point is Thusis - from there you hike through the mystical Viamala Gorge into Val Schons to Andeer. After a stopover with thermal baths or culture, the route leads over the wildly romantic Roffla Gorge into the Ferrera Valley. On the old Averserstrasse you follow the Walserweg into the valley - past impressive rock formations, historic bridges and traditional hamlet structures - to Juppa.
Via high pastures, historic alpine paths and mountain villages, you descend to Soglio - the "most beautiful balcony in the Alps" with a breathtaking view of the panorama of the Bregaglia granite giants.
On the Italian side, a varied continuation awaits you: chestnut forests, cultural trails, old mule tracks, quiet hamlets and alpine crossings lead you to the famous Acquafraggia waterfalls, continue through the valley of Piuro to the impressive Palazzo Vertemate and finally along a comfortable river path to the historic town of Chiavenna, the cultural end point of the route.
