Description

From the Eggli mountain station of the Fanas aerial cableway, you reach the first summit, Sassauna (2307 m), over the rather steep south flank. The panorama rewards the first effort. On one side stand the giants of the Rätikon range — Schesaplana, Drusenfluh, Sulzfluh — while on the other side you overlook the expanses of the Prättigau valley. Now you leave the marked hiking trails and follow the ridge line in pathless terrain (T4). Here comes the key section of this route — surefootedness is required. Exposed passages occasionally require the use of hands, but those who master the section to Pfäwi can enjoy the rest. You then collect the peaks Lägend-, Tüf- and Hoch-Sagettis before crossing the hiking path at the Fadurer Fürggli. Via the steep but well-passable ridge, you reach the highest point of this route, the Girenspitz. The spectacular view invites a pause before descending to Hochstelli and then steeply down to meet the marked hiking trail. The red-white path leads to the Schuderser Maiensässe and from there along the road to Schuders. From Schuders, the post bus takes you back to the valley over the famous Salginatobel Bridge.

Variants

Variant 1: For those who find the ridge line too demanding or conditions are poor, the Fadurer basin at around 2000 m can be crossed on white-red marked hiking trails.

Variant 2: From the Fadurer Fürggli, you reach the Prättigauer Höhenweg via the Golrosa saddle, which leads to the Schesaplana hut, an excellent starting point for further alpine hikes. About 2 hours from the Fadurer Fürggli, T2.

Hidden Gem

With the Fanas aerial cableway, you easily overcome the first meters of altitude.
Enjoy a mid-morning coffee and the view at the Sassauna mountain house before starting refreshed.

Safety Note

The path is classified according to the SAC hiking scale as T4 to T5 (demanding alpine hiking). The ridge from Sassauna to Höchstelli is unmarked.
The key section between Sassauna and Pfäwi is rated as T5, the remaining ridge as T4.

Path / Terrain: Often pathless, at some points hands are needed to progress, some simple climbing parts. Exposed, demanding terrain, delicate grassy slopes, rocky areas.

Requirements: Hiking boots. Secure terrain assessment and very good orientation skills. Good alpine experience.

Equipment

Sturdy hiking boots, alpine hiking clothing adapted to the season. An up-to-date hiking map in the backpack is just as advisable as sun, rain and warmth protection, water bottle and tour provisions. Trekking poles increase surefootedness and relieve the joints. For emergencies: first aid kit, rescue blanket, mobile phone. Additionally, a compass and altimeter may be recommended.
