Valletta da Bever

Looking for a hidden gem? Then this route proposal is just the thing. The Valletta da Bever is largely unknown, and accordingly the path between Spinas and Margunin is little frequented. From the Cho d’Valletta, daring views open up deep into the Val Bever or across the Engadin to the Bernina group.

Description

The hike starts at Spinas train station. You can get here with the Rhaetian Railway, by bike, on foot, or – depending on the time of day – also by carriage. Coming from the station, you pass the inn, cross the road leading through the Val Bever, and turn right a few meters further at the farm building of the Alp. Once the meadow is crossed, the path begins to climb at the forest edge.

After about 300 meters of elevation through open forest, the hiking trail crosses the stream draining the valley – first on a bridge, then via a ford. The latter requires some improvisation skills in early summer when the water level is high. The rest of the way leads up on the orographically right side of the valley to Margunin. There, the view suddenly opens up to the Engadin all the way to the Bernina group.

At Margunin, the difficult choice awaits, as you can continue your route to Piz Padella or descend directly to Samedan. However, this route proposal continues another 100 meters uphill – onto the ridge Cho d’Valletta. No fear of heights is an advantage in places, as the views down into the Val Bever are impressive. Nevertheless, the path is nowhere exposed.

Passing the blasting masts, which can trigger artificial avalanches in winter and thus ensure the safety of the most important traffic routes between Bever and Spinas, as well as massive avalanche barriers, you approach the Alp Muntatsch. Those who have time can stop in; those in a hurry continue seamlessly and descend via Muntarütsch further down to Bever.

If you still haven't had enough, we recommend the rear Val Bever, where the landscape and especially the Beverin river can be seen in its wild, unspoilt state. Against this backdrop, it has been awarded the ‘Gewässerperle PLUS’ label since summer 2021.

Gewässerperle PLUS – a natural gem of national importance

The Beverin is the first river in Switzerland to be awarded the ‘Gewässerperle PLUS’ label. The 13.5-kilometre-long mountain stream received this special honour because it has remained largely untouched by humans – a true wild stream without artificial corrections. From its source near Piz d'Err to just before Bever, the Beverin meanders freely through the picturesque Val Bever, surrounded by valuable fens and floodplain landscapes. This unspoilt mountain water world provides an ideal habitat for many rare animal and plant species, including otters, brown trout, stoneflies and numerous willow species. The label recognises not only the ecological value of the Beverin, but also the commitment of the municipality of Bever to preserving this unique natural paradise.
