Valletta da Bever
Looking for an insider tip? Then this tour suggestion is just the thing. The Valletta da Bever is largely unknown, and the path between Spinas and Margunin is correspondingly little used. And from the Cho d'Valletta there are daring views down into the Val Bever or across the Engadin to the Bernina group.

Description

The hike begins at Spinas station. You can get here by Rhaetian Railway, by bike, on foot or – depending on the time of day – by horse-drawn carriage. Coming from the station, you pass the inn, cross the road leading through Val Bever and turn right a few meters further on at the alpine farm building. As soon as you have crossed the meadow, the path begins to climb along the edge of the forest.

After about 300 meters in altitude through sparse forest, the hiking trail crosses the streams that drain the valley – first on a bridge, then with a ford. The latter requires a little improvisation in early summer when the water level is high. The remainder of the route then follows the orographic right-hand side of the valley up to Margunin. There, the view of the Engadin as far as the Bernina group suddenly opens up.

On Margunin, you are now spoiled for choice and can continue your tour to Piz Padella or descend directly to Samedan. This tour suggestion, however, takes you another 100 meters uphill - to the Cho d'Valletta ridge. A head for heights is an advantage in places, as the views down into Val Bever are impressive. However, the path is not exposed anywhere.

You pass by the blasting masts, which can trigger artificial avalanches in winter and thus ensure the safety of the most important traffic routes between Bever and Spinas, as well as massive avalanche barriers as you approach Alp Muntatsch. If you have time, stop for a bite to eat; those in a hurry can continue the hike seamlessly and descend further to Bever via Muntarütsch.
