Description
The starting point of the hike is Splügen. At the bottom of the bridge, the path goes to the right, instead of the cantonal road, the path leads to the parallel quiet riverside path. Along the banks of the Hinterrhein you reach the campsite Sand with the cross-country skiing centre. Here the path leads for five minutes along the cantonal road and then climbs uphill on the half-right, parallel to the cross-country ski run.
Where the winter hiking trails branch off, it continues uphill. After varied ups and downs you reach Medels - the smallest village in the valley. The hike continues through the village, past the church and on towards Nufenen.
On the sunny side of the valley we continue towards Nufenen. There you can see the Rheinwald, which is interwoven with an attractive network of fantastic cross-country ski trails. At the first houses of Nufenen we leave the cross-country ski run and reach the village center on the pathed village road.
From Nufenen the path continues to Hinterrhein. After the last houses in Nufenen, a beautiful winter path begins uphill and downhill through the Cassana forest. At the first house of Hinterrhein, the path leads into the cantonal road, on which we reach the village center five minutes later.
Back to Splügen you can easily take the PostBus.
Information on the condition of the winter hiking trails in the Rheinwald can be found here.
