The Muretto Pass

Show all 3 images
An important crossing, direct connection between Bergell and Valmalenco. In old times it was a precious transport route for goods between Veltlin and the northern regions.
Details
Description
The width of the mule track on the Italian side shows the importance of this crossing. In contrast, the path on the Swiss side is rather narrow and partly quite steep and rocky. The route offers a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains, especially of the north face of Monte Disgrazia, which can be greatly admired on the descent into Valmalenco.

Safety Note
The last section north of the Muretto pass is steep and at the beginning of summer there are often still snowfields here that melt only slowly in the shade...
Equipment
Hiking boots, sufficient water, ID
Directions
You start at the last hairpin bends of the Malojapass. A short road leads to the large Orden parking lot. From there, the small country road goes to the houses of Salecina and further along the Orlegna to the enchanting Cavloc Lake. You leave the lake behind and hike through the valley to the junction to the Muretto Valley. The path turns left and crosses the Orlegna. Shortly thereafter, the trail rises, always following the stream bed into the Val Muretto. The last ascent to the pass height is very steep and rocky; the path leads more to the left up the gully.
On the Italian side of the Muretto pass, the path is wider and runs comfortably as a mule track through the Val Malenco, past some alp farms to Chiareggio.
