San Romerio

A climb through the woods leads to the highlight of the tour: Alpe San Romerio at 1,800 meters above sea level, with its Romanesque church on a rocky promontory. After a stop at the San Romerio Refuge, a steep descent of 800 meters above sea level to Lake Poschiavo follows.

Description

The route follows the well-maintained hiking trail of mule track no. 30 of Via Valtellina to San Romerio. Behind the hospital in Poschiavo begins a slight climb on agricultural roads, which then becomes visibly steeper on hiking trails with roots and stones. Among the trees you can enjoy the view of Lake Poschiavo and the mountains in front, which form the border with Italy.

After the culminating point at 1848 meters above sea level, the trail runs gently on a soft coniferous ground to the hamlet of San Romerio. At the end of the forest, the view suddenly opens up on the lower Valposchiavo and the nearby Valtellina. A backward look allows a unique view towards the Bernina Pass.

At Ristoro San Romerio you can refresh yourself with drinks and local food before tackling the steep descent through fir and larch woods. The foresters did a great job and restored the path, destroyed by the damage of the storm, with a new track, partly very steep. Here it is important to maintain maximum concentration, as roots and stones are hidden under the foliage, especially in spring and autumn.

Once you arrive at the bottom of the valley, the return to Poschiavo follows the shore of the lake and then the river Poschiavino on route no. 33 Via Albula/Bernina. Those who are not afraid of cold water, can take a refreshing dip at Le Prese as a reward.
