The ViaSpluga is a culturally historic hiking path which taps the history of the region around the Splügenpass. This direct route from southern Germany to Lombardy has linked the fortunes of the Rhaeto-Romanic, Walser and Lombardy people since the Middle Ages.

Description

Our tips for the viaSpluga:

  • Viamala Gorge: Carved by glacier ice and the water of the Hinterrhein into the massive rock thousands of years ago, the Viamala Gorge still reveals living traces of a fascinating history today.

  • Painted ceiling of St. Martin Church in Zillis: The Romanesque painted ceiling is world-famous. It made St. Martin Church the "Sistine Chapel of the Alps."

  • Roffla Gorge: A gorge of the Hinterrhein between Andeer-Bärenburg and Sufers.

  • Mountain village Splügen: One of the oldest and most typical pass villages in Graubünden.

  • Splügen Pass: Historic mule track (shortly before the pass summit).

The viaSpluga leads about 68 km along the once important trade route from Thusis over the Splügen Pass to the Italian Chiavenna.

Right at the beginning it overcomes the dramatic Viamala, the most famous gorge on the Splügen route. The route then leads through Zillis, Andeer and past the villages of the Schamserberg until the inviting valley narrows into the impassable Roffla Gorge. Through the sunny valley floor of the Rheinwald you reach the pass village Splügen (1475 m). From here the path ascends southwards to the Splügen Pass summit at 2114 m, then descends through the Cardinello Gorge and the wooded Val San Giacomo to Chiavenna.

The route follows historic mule trails and includes their most spectacular sections in the Viamala, Roffla and Cardinello Gorges. Despite its difficulties, it has been popular since antiquity and was already listed in the long-distance road directories of the Roman Empire, as it forms an almost straight connection between southern Germany and Lombardy.

Road and path construction, transport services and trade, intellectual exchange and artistic creative power have shaped the landscape and settlements and expanded the livelihoods and horizons of the local farmers. The church of Zillis with its world-famous Romanesque ceiling paintings represents the artistic highlight of the route, which connects three Alpine language and cultural regions.

A stone over Splügen – the audio play of the viaSpluga
Just in time for the start of the viaSpluga season 2023, an audio format realized for the first time in this form appeared for hikers: the audio play "A stone over Splügen." On their smartphones, hikers can listen to a story at a total of 24 locations that could only take place here and nowhere else. On the four-day long-distance hike from Thusis to Chiavenna, a narrative unfolds that truly leaves space and time behind.
