Architecture of Memory – Recollecting Spaces

Description
daily
«(…) You see images, you reproduce images, you keep images in your memory. The picture is everything but a direct product of the imagination."
(Gaston Bachelard, Poetics of Space)
Can you remember the rooms of your childhood? Your childhood room, your favourite hiding place or maybe the smell in your grandparents' kitchen?
Imagine telling these memories not only with words, but also with a drawing. With a representation that does not necessarily depict the space, but corresponds to a mental and personal note of it.
What elements would you draw?
What details are important to capture your memory?
Architecture of Memory brings together around 60 architects and artists from all over Switzerland to address these questions.
After the successful presentation at the Architekturforum Zürich, the exhibition will now be shown in the Stadtgalerie Chur and expanded to include further contributions. With sketches, stories and installations, the mechanisms by which our mind transforms spatial memories into concrete thoughts are examined. The different approaches to the form of representation or materiality of the works show how time influences and distorts perceptions of space. This process is part of a translation that takes place from memory while sketching and forms the starting point for the exhibition Architecture of Memory.
