In Sokcho, a small seaside town in South Korea, 23-year-old Soo-Ha leads a routine life between visits to her mother, a fishmonger, and her relationship with her boyfriend Jun-oh. The arrival of Frenchman Yan Kerrand at the boarding house where she works raises questions about her own identity. As winter numbs the city, they observe each other, test each other and forge a fragile bond.

With "Hiver à Sokcho", the French-Japanese director Koya Kamura has created a congenial adaptation of the novel of the same name by Elisa Shua Dusapin, a Swiss woman living in French-speaking Switzerland, which was awarded the Prix Robert Walser in 2016. While reading the book, the filmmaker felt a personal connection with the main character, as the story also reflects his own life. In the sensitive and sensual film adaptation of the novel, in which Roschdy Zem plays the lonely French draughtsman Yan Kerrand and Soo-Ha Bella plays the Korean woman on her way to finding herself, he allows us to participate in an inwardly eventful winter in the distance.
