Event Surselva
Exhibition: The District Judge's Hall – newly presented in Trun
Description
on Monday, Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday
From 1487 onwards, a rotation was established between the three main lords – the Abbot of Disentis, the Lordship of Rhäzün and the Lordship of Sax-Misox. The nominating principal proposed three candidates from his dominion, one of whom was elected by the Bundestag. In the 374 years of the existence of the Grey League, 148 people were elected as district judges in this way. Around 1700, they began to decorate the district judge's hall with their coats of arms. Today, 182 coats of arms adorn the hall, 106 of which belong to the former district judges of the Grey League. In the current exhibition, these coats of arms are broken down and the associated district judges are portrayed. You will learn who was elected most often, which families were in power, whose coat of arms is not present in the hall, or who abused their office to enrich themselves. A piece of the history of the Confederation, of individuals but also of entire families is addressed here. Visit the exhibition and browse through the file – perhaps one of your ancestors was a district judge?
