Guided tour of the church in Pitash
Description
Founded in the 9th or 10th century, the church of Pitasch is now a Romanesque building from the 12th century. It is located on the early medieval transversal of the Alps, which led from Pfäfers over the Kunkel Pass to Sagogn and Pitasch and on via the Güner Lückli into the Safiental, Splügen and Chiavenna.
Visitors are not only interested in the Romanesque rectangular hall with its semicircular apse, but also in the masonry and paintings, including a large St. Christopher and St. Martin on the southern outer wall, the patron saint of the church before the Reformation, from the workshop of the Waltsburg master, a holiday Christ by an unknown painter from around 1400 and stained glass windows by Hans Affeltranger from 1979.
Andreas Caviezel was president of the parish and from 1976 to 1985 accompanied the restoration of the church, during which the building was restored to its Romanesque state. He therefore knows the Church like few others and passes on his knowledge with enthusiasm.
