Lenian – Life and suffering of a Graubünden red deer

A lecture by Fabian Riedi.

After intensive observation in the heart of the Alps, the life story of a capital red deer can be unfolded. I accompanied the deer named Lenian from the age of three for a total of twelve years - from the age of 12 even for 828 days almost without gaps. This makes it possible for me to show in detail the nature, development and use of space of this deer on the basis of many observations.

From the inconspicuous stag in the youth troop to the mature fighter, from the seasonally different use of habitat to the social organization in the pack, from the tense shedding of antlers to the continuous growth and cornering of the new headdress, from the paralyzing abundance in the summer feiste to the barren and exhausting winter seasons, from the silent and inconspicuous Bast deer to the loudly roaring top dog - in all facets of the existence of a Rothirsches I can share with you with countless captivating pictures and descriptions of experiences.

The unique thing: Last but not least, I was allowed to accompany the 15-year-old Hirsch unexpectedly and suddenly into his natural death. This offers the unique opportunity in the wild to subject the suffering and death of a wild red deer to a fact-rich analysis thanks to an extensive photo archive and precise observation protocols.
