NATURAMA Lecture: The Magpie – Intelligent and Successful

The magpie is one of the well-known birds. This is not surprising, because she likes to live in our neighborhood and stands out with her variously colored plumage and her powerful voice. In some places, the magpie does not have the best reputation – it is considered thieving, is said to decimate songbirds or even represent a "plague". But what is true about it, and what is human imagination or cliché? In his lecture, biologist Ueli Rehsteiner will provide exciting insights into the biology, occurrence and behaviour of the magpie. He also explores the question of the extent to which widespread opinions about this bird are biologically correct. This much can already be revealed: Magpies are clever, adaptable and social - all characteristics that we like to attribute to ourselves.
