OLGA TOKARCZUK READS FROM HER NOVEL EMPUSION

Isabell Vonlanthen from the Literaturhaus Zürich will host the evening.

The Nobel Prize winner for literature will read from her latest novel "Empusion" and answer questions from Dr. Isabell Vonlanthen, deputy director of the Literaturhaus Zürich. The event will be translated by Lothar Quinkenstein, who has been translating the works of Olga Tokarczuk since 2017.

About the book «Empusion»:

Shortly before the outbreak of the First World War, a young engineering student undergoes a special development during a spa stay for lung patients in the mountains. Olga Tokarczu's first novel since the writer was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature blatantly draws parallels to "The Magic Mountain", the magnus opus by Thomas Mann - another Nobel Prize winner for literature.

However, some 100 years after the publication of the famous original, "Empusion" is not a deep bow, but a response that is as irreverent as it is sophisticated. Themes such as Eros, nature, death and femininity are brushed against the grain here. Even formally, the novel comes across as radically different. Olga Tokarczuk chooses the genre of the horror novel for her coming-of-age story about the 24-year-old Polish student Mieczyslaw Wojnicz – hardly any genre could seem more bizarre (and humorous) in connection with Thomas Mann.

Jan Ehlert from NDR describes it as a feminist version of The Magic Mountain and one can look forward to the discussion with the audience.
