Event Engadin Samnaun Val Müstair
Vernissage: mit träumen
Description
With works by Angelika Annen, Benjamin Egger, June Fischer, Stefanie Salzmann, Sophie Schmidt and Vital Z'Brun.
Dreams can open up access that remain closed in waking life – for example, to animals and other non-human beings. At the heart of the exhibition "mit träumen" is the idea that these nocturnal encounters can inspire new perspectives and possibilities for our actions in the waking state. Six artists invite us to rethink the relationship between humans, animals and the environment based on human and animal dreams. Especially in view of the climate crisis, it is becoming clear that we should broaden our horizons and resume dialogue with other beings.
The inspiration for this exhibition was the story "Believing in the Wild" (2019) by anthropologist and author Nastassja Martin, who conducts research in Alaska and on the East Siberian peninsula of Kamchatka near Gwich'in and Even. In this book, Martin tells how she met a bear while mountaineering in the glaciated volcanoes of Kamchatka. This encounter made her a bear herself, in her dreams and in the physical world. From then on, she moved in a zone of uncertainty, for the resolution of which there are no recipes, no rituals, neither among the Even, with whom she lived and researched as a guest, nor in France, where she lives.
Such destabilizing and transforming encounters play a role in the works of Angelika Annen, Benjamin Egger, June Fischer, Stefanie Salzmann, Sophie Schmidt and Vital Z'Brun. In their practice, they deal with the relationship between humans and animals and use dreams, science fiction and the technique of "Écriture automatique" as media and states of consciousness to create spaces of possibility for contact between the different species.
