Description

We start the hike at the Palfries mountain station. The Palfriesbahn cable car takes us up around 1,250 meters in just 12 minutes. The cable car travels over an impressive waterfall (Ragnatscher Bach) and takes us up to the Palfries plateau.

In contrast to the other descent options to the valley station, this variant is less strenuous, even if it doesn't seem so at first glance in terms of the time required. From the mountain station, we hike to the Palfries mountain inn, where we have two hiking options. For the route via Alp Malun, we take the path towards Alvier. For the Alp Castilu variant, we follow the path in the direction of the Stralrüfi mountain restaurant. Both routes lead to the Hotel Kurhaus Sennis. From there, we continue along hiking trails, mainly on natural roads, back to the valley station.

Hidden Gem

Make a stopover at the Stralrüfi mountain restaurant or enjoy lunch or a snack at the former Kurhaus Sennis.

Equipment

Day hiking backpack (approx. 20 liters) with rain cover, sturdy and comfortable shoes, weather-appropriate and hard-wearing clothing in multiple layers, telescopic poles if necessary, sun and rain protection, provisions and drinking water, first aid kit, pocket knife, cell phone, headlamp if necessary, maps

Directions

The hikes to the Kurhaus Sennis are described in the following hikes:

  • Sennis round tour, via Malun
  • Sennis round tour, via Castilu

From the Kurhaus Sennis, the hiking trail leads us along a natural road in the general direction of the valley through open and wooded terrain. Shortly after the 1000 meter long, flat stretch of road, the hiking signpost (after the bend) directs us onto the former, very steep access road. This rejoins the asphalt road, which we follow for about 600 meters. Once again, we leave the road and follow the original mule track. We meet the asphalt road one last time, which we follow for 300 meters. To the right of the road, the hiking signpost points us to the left, where the hike continues on a dirt road towards Valaschga. Once in the forest, we head downhill through a lane until we reach the asphalt road. The trail then continues to the left through a shady forest, always slightly downhill. At the Poli estate, the hiking trail branches off to the left and leads over the footbridge of the Hagerbach stream. To ensure that we do not end up on the main road, we must pay close attention to the signposts on site (large square); in particular, do not take the path over the dam. As soon as we come out of the forest, we can already see the Palfries cable car.
