Description
The ascent takes place mostly on asphalt and gravel roads in the lower section. Along the way, you can enjoy an impressive view of the Sarganserland, the Churfirsten, and the Alvier mountain range. From Mädems Vorsäss, the landscape opens up and leads through an idyllic alpine world all the way to Alp Mädems.
A short but impressive high-altitude path (approx. 15 minutes) marks the transition to the descent. This begins on open alpine meadows and becomes narrower and more technical as it progresses – although almost continuously rideable for experienced bikers. The last section down to the Berghotel Schönhalden rewards with a spectacular deep view into the valley. A break on the hotel's sunny terrace is definitely worthwhile.
Afterwards, the highlight of the route follows: a descent of over 1,000 meters in altitude almost exclusively on single trails. It starts technically demanding but becomes increasingly smoother and guarantees real riding fun.
Note: If you prefer an easier option, you can switch to alpine and forest roads all the way to Flums. From Flums, the route calmly follows the Seez river back to Mels.

Safety Note
The descent on the hiking trail from Mädems Hintersäss to Flums Portels is partly rocky, contains loose stones, and can be difficult when wet due to cow hoof prints. From the Berghotel Schönhalden, there are several options to leave the single trail and switch to the alpine and forest roads.
