Very beautiful circular hike from Bondo through Castasegna to Soglio
Details
Description
It is mostly a casual walk, almost entirely on a small road. Only the last part from Plazza to Soglio and down from there to Promontogno is quite steep – those who want can use the PostAuto for this section.
The path first passes a row of beautiful old barns and gently rises over the plain spreading west from Bondo. The middle part runs through the forest, at the end of which you have a charming view of Castasegna and the lower part of Bergell. For the ascent to Soglio, we choose the route through the chestnut grove of Brentan and the tunnel (carved into the raw rock), through which you pass under the Caroggia stream by a beautiful waterfall.
From Plazza starts the steeper part of the route up to Soglio. From Soglio, a very steep path (sure-footedness required!) leads down to Promontogno and Bondo.
Hidden Gem
At the start of the route, take a look at the Renaissance paintings in the small church of San Martino in Bondo...
For refreshment in Castasegna, try a chestnut ice cream at the pastry shop Salis...
During the break in Soglio, browse in the Bottega...
Perhaps you will find a souvenir for those at home in the little shop (Buteghina) in Bondo...?
Safety Note
To avoid the steep ascent from Plazza to Soglio and the descent from Soglio to Bondo, it is possible to use the PostAuto.
Equipment
Trekking shoes, poles, water
Directions
At the church of Bondo, turn into the small road, which is wide and well marked by low walls. It leads westwards along the edge of the forest. At a clearing, a path branches off to the right, leading directly to Castasegna. However, it is better to follow the road. It leads to the huts of Motta (882 m), where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the valley. Downwards through meadows and individual chestnut trees, you reach the huts of Salascé and Casnac before crossing the river Maira to Castasegna (697 m). You cross the Maira on a stone bridge and continue towards the village center.
Just below Villa Garbald, a small steep road turns upwards, leading to the square in front of the power plant. From here, it goes gently uphill through the well-known chestnut grove. Further up, the gravel road runs diagonally across the slope towards the stream, until after a bend you stand in front of the impressive waterfall. A little caution is required on the bumpy road in the dark tunnel. Once you have passed under the stream, it is not long to Plazza, where the impressive chestnut giants stretch their branches to the sky. From here, the path becomes rather steep and crosses the main road several times on the way to Soglio.
After visiting the picturesque village, you go down to Bondo. To the right of the church San Lorenzo, a steep, moderately difficult path leads through the forest below to the village Promontogno and from there further to Bondo.
