Description
Embedded in a romantic wild mountain basin lie the three Murg lakes. Brooks, lakes, waterfalls, peat meadows, rockeries and the protected Swiss pine forest reserve by the lowest of the Murg lakes make this round trip an unforgettable nature experience.
From Murg am Walensee you can reach the starting point by car or Murgsee bus (Taxi Walser, Murg). The ascent to Gspon is relatively steep and good hiking boots and physical fitness are required. After this, the terrain becomes flatter. The path leads along the Gsponbach to Alp Unter Mürtschen. Copper and silver ore were mined here, particularly in the second half of the 19th century.
The Mürtschenstock with its three peaks, Stock, Fulen and Ruchen, rises up imposingly on the way to Ober Mürtschen. Over the Murgseefurggel you reach the Murg lakes, framed within a garland of mountains. In little time, the upper Murg lake is reached with the Murg lake mountain hut, which owes its existence to the earlier ore mining.
Past the middle Murg lake, the route leaves the valley. If you take a look behind you, you can see the waterfall that crashes down into the lower Murg lake. This lake is located in a nature reserve with ancient Swiss pines. No use of timber takes place in any form; the area is protected as a forest reserve. Hiking over the Alp Guflen and Alp Mornen returns you to the starting point in Merlen.
Note(s)
There is no public transport available for getting to Merlen. You can however get there with the Murgtal bus (with no set timetable) from Murg station - you need to register in advance by telephone: +41 (0)81 738 14 48 (Taxi Walser, Murg).
Best period: July - October.

Geheimtipp
The artist H.R. Fricker has created the "Rock Garden Murgtal" between Alp Plätz and the uppermost Murgsee. www.steingarten-murgtal.ch
Sicherheitshinweis
In spring, the hiking trail can still be covered in snow at the section between the middle and lower Murg lakes (Peterjosen-Gfäsch). Since the terrain next to the hiking trail is sloping, caution is advised here under appropriate conditions.
Ausrüstung
For the round trip, sturdy shoes are an advantage, as especially after rainfall and at the time of snow melt, the path can be wet and slippery in some places.
