Description

The mule track Avers via Cröt is an impressive multi-day tour that leads from Thusis via the Viamala Gorge, Zillis and Andeer to Bregaglia to Soglio and on to Chiavenna. The route inspires with a unique mixture of alpine nature, historical culture and living history.

The hike starts in Thusis and leads through the imposing Viamala Gorge before reaching Zillis with its world-famous painted church ceiling from the 12th century. Continue to Andeer, where the mineral-rich waters of the well-known mineral bath invite you to enjoy some well-deserved relaxation.

From Andeer, the path descends gently to Innerferrera, where it meets the historic Averserstrasse. At the Valle-di-Lei bridge, the Ferrera and Avers valleys unite. On the way, masterful bridges, deep gorges, historic Walser houses and quiet alpine landscapes await. In particular, the ornate natural stone bridges and geological features such as the sinter formations at Starlera bear witness to the fascinating history of the valley.

From Cröt, the route crosses the secluded Madris. Along the Madrischer Rhein, the path climbs to Sovräna in the Val da la Prasgnola, up to the pass at 2,724 m above sea level. Over the impressive stone slab staircase, once built for the summering of the animals from the Bregaglia, exposed passages secured with chains lead down to Soglio. The historic village with Mediterranean flair, narrow streets and sun-drenched stone houses forms an impressive conclusion to this stage.

The final stage runs from Soglio through chestnut forests and the Bregaglia to Chiavenna. Along the way, historic villages, waterfalls, vineyards and cultural highlights such as Palazzo Vertemate invite you to explore. After crossing the border, the Italian Bregaglia opens up with charming villages and Mediterranean flair. The tour ends in lively Chiavenna, where traditional grottos, the glacier mills of the Marmitte dei Giganti and the Italian way of life await.

  • Mineral bath Andeer: Relax in the warm water and enjoy the healing effects of the spring.

Safety Note

This hike requires surefootedness, a head for heights and good physical condition. The section from the Pass de la Prasgnola down to Soglio is particularly challenging: the trail markings (white-red-white) can be difficult to see in bad weather or limited visibility. Good weather conditions are therefore a prerequisite for this tour.

Equipment

Sturdy mountain hiking boots, weatherproof clothing and sufficient food are indispensable. Hiking poles can further increase safety and comfort on the steep passages.

Directions

For hikers interested in the alternative route of the mule track, we recommend the original route from Innerferrera via Juf to Soglio. This variant leads from section 2 on a different path through the high alpine landscape and is divided into 5 stages. It also offers impressive views, historical insights and the opportunity to discover the alpine region in a different, varied way.
