Friedhof Maloja

As the main representative of Italian Pointillism, Segantini preferred rustic themes of the untouched majestic mountain world of Maloja, Soglio, where he spent his winters, and Engadin. These themes are reflected in his works.

Description

The famous pointillist painter, lover of alpine landscapes, found inspiration in the enchanting scenery and special light of this quiet mountain village. A hundred years after his arrival in Maloja, the Segantini Trail was created. It was designed by Basel photographers Labahrd and Galli. The trail takes you on a wonderful 2-hour hike, which includes 12 stages. At each stage, there is an interpretive panel illustrating Segantini's life and works.

Starting at the atelier, you visit the special places that inspired Segantini, places where he painted several well-known paintings of majestic rocky landscapes. The walk ends with a visit to the small cemetery, where the visitor can pay respects at the family tomb.

Directions

The Sentiero begins at the Casa Segantini and Atelier. The Segantini family moved into the former Chalet Kuoni in August 1894. From the first station you can easily reach the "Belvedere Tower". In the past, this was the site of the castle built by Count de Renesse. Segantini planned to rebuild it and to live there with his family. The view from the castle into Bergell is magnificent. The next stop is a glacier mill that Segantini chose for the painting "Die Eitelkeit".

Continuing towards Lake Sils, you pass the summer house of the Giacometti family, where Segantini's friend Giovanni Giacometti partly lived and painted. Another stop is at the beginning of the Silsersee. (parking lot). On a stone you will find two panels. On one you can see the painting "Frühlingsweide" on the other a painting by Giovanni Giacometti, Segantini's friend. It shows the Palace hotel and was painted on the way to Blaunca.

Following the lake, one branches off to the right to Maloja Palace, where the next panel can be found. The imposing building was built by the Belgian Count de Renesse. You then walk back through the village and in the center of the village, next to a newly built house, you will find a plaque that is more of a contemporary testimony. Here was the so-called "Taverna americana", a modest stone hut that Segantini integrated in his painting "Passing".

On the way to Salecina, on the left side, also next to new houses, you first reach the place where Segantini painted the picture "Rückkehr in die Heimat". Continuing along the small path, one reaches the place where the "Vergehen" from the triptych was painted. On the way back towards the cemetery, you reach a tiny path that leads to the "Äla". After about 5 minutes, one faces several panels.

"My studio". Here Segantini received art lovers, journalists and guests. At this point you can also see how much the vegetation has changed in the time from then to now. The next stop on the Sentiero is the Maloja cemetery. In the cemetery is the Segantini grave. With a view of the Bergell mountains Segantini painted the picture "Glaubenstrost". Especially at this station you can see how much the vegetation and village architecture have changed from then to now.

If you follow the path towards the lake, you will soon see the Chiesa Bianca with its red spire. Segantini was laid to rest in this little church and Giovanni Giacometti painted the last picture of his dead friend. Here the Sentiero ends. With a view of Piz Duan and the glacier peaks, one understands Segantini's last words... "I want to see my mountains" The Sentiero and this view will certainly not be forgotten so quickly.
