Description

Our tips for the viaSpluga:

  • Viamala Gorge: Carved into the massive rock by glacier ice and the water of the Hinterrhein thousands of years ago, the Viamala Gorge still shows vivid traces of a fascinating history today.
  • Painted ceiling of the Church of St. Martin in Zillis: The Romanesque painted ceiling is world-famous. It has made the Church of St. Martin the "Sistine Chapel of the Alps".
  • Mountain village of Splügen: One of the oldest and most typical pass villages of Graubünden.
  • Splügen Pass: Historic drover's path (shortly before the pass summit).

Right at the beginning the route leads through the versatile Domleschg, past Sils i.D., Scharans, Almens and Tomils, before reaching Rothenbrunnen. The landscape is characterized by orchards, dry stone walls and the numerous castles of the region. Along the Hinterrhein it goes back to Thusis, where the Viamala trail leads to the impressive Viamala Gorge. High above the Hinterrhein, the route winds through the impressive rock gorge and finally reaches Zillis, home of the famous Church of St. Martin with its Romanesque ceiling paintings. The route continues via Donat and Clugin to Andeer.

From Andeer the path climbs past the granite works before changing to a natural road. A steep gravel path between huge rock blocks is replaced by a soft forest floor. After a strenuous ascent, an impressive panoramic view opens onto the Schams valley. Past the alpine settlement Dros the route leads to the junction Lai da Vons / Sufers. Here the emerald-green mountain lake Lai da Vons invites to rest before the route leads down gently winding to Sufers. Along historic paths you finally reach Splügen.

From Splügen the route initially follows the main road towards Splügen Pass. At the fifth hairpin bend it turns right to Tambo Alp and continues to the Tanatzhöhe. After crossing the gentle alpine meadows it goes via Bodmastafel back to the pass road. On historic paths the way continues to climb to the Splügen Pass height at 2114 m, where the Switzerland-Italy border is crossed at the same time, before descending through the barren high mountains towards Montespluga.

The last stage leads from Montespluga through the Val San Giacomo, with a detour through Madesimo, and finally ends in Chiavenna.

On the four-day long-distance hike from Thusis to Chiavenna, a narrative unfolds that truly leaves space and time behind.

Hidden Gem
