Kornmühle Unterterzen

Description
On the western edge of the Rüti meadow, right next to the Rüti stream, stands a freestanding grain mill in Unterterzen, which is over 250 years old.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, it served as an important trading mill for Eastern Switzerland. Due to the difficult transport conditions of the time, grain rather than flour was brought in and milled locally.
The mill was also still in use in the 20th century:
During the First World War (1914–1918) and the Second World War (1939–1945), it was in continuous operation, sometimes even at night.
In the interwar period, it operated for only three to four weeks per year and was mainly used by farmers from Quarten, Oberterzen, Murg, Quinten and Mols, who milled their own grain here.
The mill was primarily used for maize, though wheat was occasionally processed. As the slopes around Lake Walen were not well suited to grain cultivation, the farmers gave up growing maize and wheat after the Second World War and focused on livestock farming instead.
In 1947, the mill ceased operations permanently.
