Origin and nationality – that is, origin – are often not obvious at first glance, as this programme shows in a wonderful way. Frederick Delius was British by birth, educated in Germany, living in France; musically at home between Grieg, Strauss and Debussy. His orchestral intermezzo The Walk to the Paradise Garden sounds exactly as the title promises: paradisiacal. Paradise, by the way, is in Switzerland, because the intermezzo comes from an opera adaptation of Gottfried Keller's Romeo and Juliet in the Village. Saint Saëns' poetic, narrative, one-movement Cello Concerto No. 1 seems to come directly from Mendelssohn's dream worlds, but also has its origins clearly in French music. The young Canadian cellist Bryan Cheng will enchant with his refinement – we promise. And where do you think the origins of Antonín Dvořák's Seventh lie? In the deep, deep Bohemian Forest? Or maybe even in London?
Dvořák wrote the work for the Philharmonic Society there. He was inspired by Brahms' Third Symphony and the result is a masterpiece full of passion that combines Slavic influences with great symphonic breadth.
