Description

The Sentiero Alpino Bregaglia is a high alpine trek through one of the wildest, most untouched areas in the Alps, varied and with spectacular views. The tour connects the four Bergell SAC huts and consists of five routes, some of which can also be walked as day hikes:
  • Forno panoramic trail
This trail is aptly named: it offers the most beautiful views of the surrounding landscape and passes several small mountain lakes whose waters reflect the nearby mountain peaks.
    Approx. 10 km, ascent from Maloja 1100 m, descent 210 m, duration approx. 5-6 hours, T3+
  • Pass da Casnil
From the Casnil Sud pass, you can enjoy a magnificent view and look directly at the impressive north face of the Cima dal Cantun. If you are lucky, you may even spot ibexes.
    Approx. 8.5 km, ascent 750 m, descent 1000 m, duration approx. 5-6 hours, T5
  • Pass Cacciabella Sud
    Approx. 6.8 km, ascent 730 m, descent 940 m, duration approx. 4-5 hours, T5
  • Descent Sciora hut to Bondo
    Approx. 7.8 km, ascent 100 m, descent 1380 m, duration approx. 4-5 hours, T3
  • Sciora hut - Larett - Sasc Furä hut
The direct connection between the two huts was buried in the landslide in 2017. From summer 2026, there will be an alternative connection via the very beautiful new Sicora hut trail.
    Approx. 8.5 km, ascent 815 m, descent 1025 m, duration approx. 5-5.5 hours, T3
  • Descent to Bondo (or alternatively a crossing of the Passo della Trubignasca into Val Cordera
    Approx. 7.7 km, ascent 350 m, descent 1435 m, duration approx. 4-5 hours, T4

Hidden Gem

Book the huts in advance, especially at weekends and in high season.

Note: The tour can be extended with an additional overnight stay in a hut by crossing the Passo Trubignasca after the Sasc Furä hut in the direction of Val Codera. This overnight stay at the Rifugio Luigi Brasca can be booked directly at the hut on request.

Safety Note

Difficulty:

This is a challenging alpine hike (up to T5), which requires surefootedness and experience of walking in pathless terrain as well as a head for heights in places.

  • On the panoramic trail, caution is advised in early summer when crossing the snowfields below the Pizzi dei Rossi.
  • The Pass da Casnil is one of the more difficult sections of the route, graded T4/T5. The paths are partly exposed and at some points there are metal chains, which make the climbing sections safer and more pleasant. The chains are fitted at the beginning of summer. It is possible to encounter snowfields along the way, especially at the beginning of the season. More information
  • The Cacciabella Sud pass is also challenging. The descent is secured with chains and ladders. T5

Equipment

Possibly ice axe, crampons, rope harness with rope and carabiner for the equipped sections.

Directions

The route:

Day 1: Forno panoramic trail

We set off from the Maloja Pass. We hike along the footpath or the road to Lake Cavloc. From here we follow the path on the valley floor to the Forno Valley/Muretto Pass junction. Here we still have the option of taking the direct route through the Forno valley to the hut (on the right).

When we cross the Orlegna, we reach the path towards the Muretto Pass. At an altitude of around 2300 m, the panoramic route branches off to the right over the stream to the Forno hut. It passes the Laghetti di Rossi and leads through gravel fields and boulder slopes past another lake at around 2750 m to the Forno hut (2574 m).

Day 2: Pass da Casnil

From the hut we descend in steep serpentines from the marginal moraine to the glacier basin of the Val Forno. Downstream, we cross the glacial stream on a small bridge and then climb steeply south-westwards over tracks and rock slabs. Below the foothills of the Piz Casnil east ridge, we reach the passage secured with chains and iron footholds. You need to be sure-footed here.
Continue through a wide scree basin towards Pass Casnil Sud. A small valley leads southwest from here to the pass at 2941 m. Arriving at the top of the pass is another highlight: we enter a lunar landscape that is second to none - dominated by the north face of the Cima dal Cantun. Following the blue and white marked hiking trail, we initially traverse some rough boulders before reaching a striking scree ridge and descending over it to the small lakes. From here it is not far to the Capanna da l'Albigna.

Day 3: Pass Cacciabella Sud

From the Albigna hut we descend to the lake and cross the dam. From here, we follow the blue and white hiking trail to the foot of the mighty slab walls of Pizzo Frachiccio. We follow the markings and cairns through a beautiful rocky landscape and then over a steep passage secured with iron footholds and chains to the Cacciabella Sud pass at 2896 meters. From here, the view opens up for the first time to the famous granite giants Piz Cengalo and Piz Badile.
On the other side, a few exposed sections await us on the descent, which are secured with ladders, chains and ropes. After the last ladder, the Capanna di Sciora (2120m) is reached in around 30 minutes via scree and moraine fields.

Day 4: Sciora hut - Larett - Bondo

The descent is along the old hut path up to around 1900m. From Naravedar, the new trail crosses the steep slopes below Piz Grand and I Mot, and we cross the deeply incised side valleys comfortably on several breathtaking suspension bridges. Once we reach the valley floor, we follow the path along the Bondasca to Bondo.

Day 4: Sciora hut - Larett - Sasc Furä hut
The descent is along the old hut trail up to around 1900 m. From Naravedar, the new trail crosses the steep slopes below Piz Grand and I Mot, and we cross the deeply incised side valleys comfortably on several breathtaking suspension bridges.
We reach the lowest point at Selvartigh and cross the Bundasca valley floor using a suspension bridge that was still installed in Bondo until spring 2025. After a short ascent, we cross the Trubinasca. We follow the path slightly uphill to the east for just under a kilometer until we come across the former hut path from the Bondasca Valley to the Sasc Furä hut at Jerta. From here, the path becomes quite steep and leads us about 200 vertical meters through the rock band below the Sasc Furä. The last 200 vertical meters are a little easier again and take us directly to the hut at 1904 m.

Day 5: Descent to Bondo

We follow the path southwards until the path to the Turbinasca Pass branches off to the left at the highest point (the actual descent only comes now). We cross the slope below the pass at a slight gradient until we reach the rocky ledge that stretches down from the Pizzi dei Vanni. On a ridge, we descend a good 100 meters more steeply before we begin to circle the Salacina at around 1800 m. Unfortunately, the stream valleys and ravines on this route have to be climbed through without suspension bridges. Above Luvartigh we meet the red and white path that leads us down to Alp Cugian. We descend further into the Bondasca Valley and soon reach the end of our tour in Bondo or Promontogno.
