Details
Description
The route follows a variety of paths through shady forests, open mountain trails and across lush green alpine meadows. There are several opportunities to take a break along the way - be it at the rushing waterfall, at the cozy Lanaberg ski lodge or on the sun terrace of the Gonzen mountain inn with views of the St.Gallen Rhine Valley, Liechtenstein and as far as Austria. The route offers ideal conditions for finding your own running rhythm and remains easy to walk throughout. At the end, a panoramic high point awaits: the view of the Churfirsten and Lake Walen. A return trip on the cable car rounds off the experience in a relaxed manner.
Hidden Gem
Of the three trail routes to the top station of the cable car, this one is definitely the most beginner-friendly.
Equipment
Normal trail running equipment (good trail shoes recommended), weather-appropriate and hard-wearing clothing in multiple layers, telescopic poles if necessary, sun and rain protection. Take enough food and drink with you (self-catering principle). Maps and mobile phone with good reception.
Directions
We start our trail run at the valley station of the Palfries cable car and run through the shady Ragnatsch forest in the direction of Heiligkreuz - ideal for a run-in, as the path climbs gently. At the junction of Kürschnengasse, Tscherfingergasse and Erzweg, we follow the well-marked Erzweg in the direction of Sargans. The varied path allows us to quickly find our rhythm.
After the Erzweg, we change to the Eugstweg, which merges seamlessly into the Rheintaler-Höhenweg. The Luterbach waterfall is a good place to take a short breather. Soon afterwards, we reach the Lanaberg ski lodge - perfect for a first longer break. We continue to the Gonzen mountain inn, where we can enjoy regional cuisine and a fantastic view. The trail leads across meadows and pastures to the Rieterhütten. The ascent becomes a little steeper here, but is still manageable.
Finally, we cross wetlands on wooden bridges, follow the alpine road and finally reach the Palfries mountain station - with magnificent views of the Churfirsten peaks and Lake Walen. The descent by cable car is a relaxing finale.
