Description
The Via Alpina crosses 14 of the most beautiful Alpine passes. Through six cantons of Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein, the hiker experiences diverse culture, geology, and topography. Quiet relaxation oases alternate with thriving tourist resorts.
Wide paved roads end in dizzyingly airy ridge paths. There is no better way to get to know Swiss Alpine culture in all its facets. The state-of-the-art alpine farm with pipelines and its showroom is also on the way, as well as the alpine hut where pigs, goats, and cows watch the alpine herder making cheese in the "Kupferchessi" over an open fire.
You switch from the cozy family holiday resort to the fashionable Gstaad. One of the world’s most diverse animal and plant worlds lines the route. Faults, overthrusts, subsidence, and rockfalls testify to interestingly structured geology. Breathtaking panoramas alternate with small beauties by the wayside, and the gastronomy offers a variety of delicacies. ©schweizmobil.ch
Stage 2: Vaduz - Sargans
At Gaflei 1490 m above sea level, hikers are offered a magnificent view of the Rhine Valley. From Gaflei, the hiking trail leads down a wooded descent to Vaduz, the capital of the Principality of Liechtenstein. Vaduz has a lot to offer: art, culture, architecture, events, and diverse gastronomy. The lively main town with the car-free pedestrian zone invites you to linger in the cozy street cafés and offers a variety of cultural attractions. Special sights include Vaduz Castle, the landmark symbolizing all the princely moments to discover in Vaduz; the Liechtenstein Art Museum; the Prince’s Court Cellar; the Citytrain; the government district; the Liechtenstein National Museum; and the "Red House." The route continues from Sevelen over the Rhine. With views over the broad Rhine Valley, the path leads at the foot of the Gonzen through forests and meadows. The stage ends in the historic town of Sargans with the castle visible from afar, which majestically towers on a rock outcrop.
