Vernissage «Gottardo Segantini - Schweizer Maler, Radierer&Kunstschriftsteller»

Description
The artist Gottardo Guido Segantini was born on May 25, 1882 in Pusiano. He was the eldest of four children of the world-famous Alpine painter Giovanni Segantini. In 1894 – five years before the father's death – the Segantini family moved to Maloja into the Chalet Kuoni. The Graubünden village and the house became Gottardo Segantini’s home from then on. The room that served as a library for his father during his lifetime was converted into a studio by Gottardo Segantini.
Gottardo Segantini's artistic training took place partly through his famous father, and partly as a student at the academy in Milan. He also received instruction from the Zurich artist Hermann Gattiker. His style was certainly significantly shaped by his father’s work; his pieces clearly show the artistic affinity to Giovanni Segantini. Both artists shared a deep-seated connection to the Engadine, whose landscapes were captured in numerous paintings of theirs.
Apart from his painting activities, Gottardo Segantini engaged with the art of etching. Here too, he consciously chose to reference his father: In addition to his own works, he often used paintings by his father as subjects for his etchings, thus continuing the path of Giovanni Segantini.
Gottardo Segantini was among those artists who also engaged with their profession through writing. As an art writer, he authored, among other things, a biography of his father.
Gottardo Segantini passed away in Maloja on June 16, 1974.
