Description

Our tips for viaSpluga:

  • Viamala Gorge: Carved into the massive rock thousands of years ago by the glacial ice and the water of the Hinterrhein, living traces of a fascinating history can still be discovered in the Viamala Gorge today.
  • Picture cover of St. Martin's Church in Zillis: The Romanesque picture ceiling is world-famous. She has made the Church of St. Martin the "Sistine of the Alps".
  • Mountain village of Splügen: One of the oldest and most typical pass villages in Graubünden.
  • Splügen Pass: Historic mule track (shortly before the top of the pass).

Right at the beginning, the route leads through the versatile Domleschg, past Sils i.D., Scharans, Almens and Tomils, before reaching Rothenbrunnen. The landscape is characterized by orchards, dry stone walls and the numerous castles of the region. Along the Hinterrhein it goes back to Thusis, where the Viamala Trail leads to the imposing Viamala Gorge. High above the Hinterrhein, the route winds through the impressive rocky gorge and finally reaches Zillis, home to the famous church of St. Martin with its Romanesque ceiling paintings. The route continues via Donat and Clugin to Andeer.

From Andeer, the path climbs, past the granite works, before turning into a dirt road. A steep gravel path between huge boulders is replaced by a soft forest floor. After a powerful ascent, an impressive panoramic view of the Schamser Valley opens up. Past the Dros mountain pasture, the route leads to the Lai da Vons / Sufers junction. Here, the emerald green mountain lake Lai da Vons invites you to take a break before the route leads down gentle curves to Sufers. Along historic paths you finally reach Splügen.

From Splügen, the route first follows the main road towards the Splügen Pass. In the fifth hairpin bend, it branches off to the right to Tambo Alp and continues to the Tanatzhöhe. After crossing the gentle alpine meadows, the route leads via Bodmastafel back to the pass road. On historic paths, the path continues to climb to the top of the Splügen Pass at 2114 m, where it crosses the Swiss-Italian border at the same time before descending through the barren high mountains towards Montespluga.

The last stage leads from Montespluga through the Val San Giacomo, with a detour through Madesimo, and finally ends in Chiavenna.

A stone over the Splügen - viaSpluga's hiking radio play At the start of the 2023 viaSpluga season, an audio format for hikers was released for the first time in this form: the hiking radio play "Ein Stein über den Splügen". Via smartphone, hikers can listen to a story at a total of 24 locations that could only take place here and nowhere else. On the four-day long-distance hike from Thusis to Chiavenna, a narrative unfolds that actually leaves space and time behind.

Geheimtipp

We recommend doing the viaSpluga Bike with an e-mountain bike, as the first two stages in particular have significant climbs.

Appropriate, weather-compliant equipment is also strongly recommended.

Public Transport

Buses run along the entire route, which can be used to bridge sections of the route. It should be noted that the bus between Splügen and Chiavenna does not transport bicycles.
