Details

Description

The route leads through an impressive alpine landscape, past the spectacular Batöni waterfalls, where several watercourses unite in a wildly romantic valley basin. The trail climbs steadily and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys again and again.

A special highlight is the Wildsee, one of the five lakes of the famous 5-lake hike. Fed by the Pizol glacier, it is embedded in a barren, high alpine scenery and fascinates with its turquoise blue colour. The hike combines impressive nature experiences with historical sites - such as the area where the first ibex in Switzerland were reintroduced in 1911.

This tour is a real adventure for experienced hikers with good fitness and surefootedness - and an unforgettable experience in the midst of the majestic mountains of the Heidiland holiday region.

Hidden Gem

Park at the valley station in Wangs and take public transport to Weisstannen. This way, your car will already be in the right place at the end of the hike. Start the hike as early as possible to have enough time for breaks and the challenging climb.

Safety Note

Note the mountain summer report under www.pizol.com. There you will find the latest information about the status of the hiking trails.

Equipment

Daytime hiking backpack (approx. 20 litres) with rain cover, sturdy and comfortable footwear, weather-adapted and durable clothing in the multi-layer principle, if necessary telescopic poles, sun and rain protection, provisions and drinking water, first aid kit, pocket knife, mobile phone, possibly headlamp, map material

Directions

At the southern end of the village of Weisstannen (1004 m) the Gufelbach is crossed. After the bridge, the hike leads leisurely up along the stream, the first short stretch on a tarred road. After the end of the tarmac road, a first steeper climb through the forest and across meadows begins.

At Unterlavtina-Sässli, the valley opens up and you have a view of the surrounding mountains for the first time.

At the top right are the Rappenloch and the rocky slopes of the Marchstein and the Hühnerspitze. On 8 May 1911, the first ibex were released in this area, after these magnificent animals had previously been exterminated throughout Switzerland.

The path continues uphill in the direction of "Batöni/Pizolhütte". A footbridge leads over the stream to the other side of the valley, the path now leads directly along the Gufelbach.

You can see the impressive waterfalls of Batöni from afar. These waterfalls come together from several sides in a valley basin, with a lot of water in spring, this moated castle is a very special place.

Here the path splits, on the right it would go over the Heidel Pass to St. Martin in the Calfeisental. However, the path now leads steeply uphill to the left and partly exposed.

The view of the valley basin that has just been abandoned and more and more of the surrounding mountains is magnificent. After Alp Stofel in Oberlavtina, the destination, the Lavtina saddle , is visible at the left end of the mighty group of Lavtina horns and Pizol.

The path leads steeper and steeper uphill, first over meadows and finally zigzagging through a scree slope. From the Lavtinasattel you have a wonderful view back to Batöni and the ascent, but also ahead to the Wildsee, which is fed by the Pizol glacier. The Hochwart with its summit cross is enthroned right next to the saddle. Now follows a steep descent through rock and scree towards "Wildsee", where the path leads above the lake along boulders to Wildseeluggen . The last descent leads over a zig-zag to the Pizolhütte, on the first part of the well-known 5-lake hike. Afterwards with a chair and gondola ride down into the valley to Wangs.
